Why You Need a Digital Detox
March 13, 2019Millions of years ago, humans were developing and growing as a species. This consisted primarily of sitting on soft, comfortable seats, staring straight ahead, and moving very little except their fingers and wrists.
Wait, what? That’s not how it was?
Our bodies are incredible machines, capable of walking, running, crawling, jumping, and much more. Our hands are powerful tools that most animals don’t possess. Our minds allow us to fashion even better tools, which we then use to get food and stay safe.
Unfortunately, we don’t take advantage of very many of those attributes today. This is especially true when we work at a desk and then return home to watch TV or get on the computer. This causes neck pain, headaches, and other ailments.
There’s one answer to this – a digital detox.
What is a Digital Detox?
A digital detox consists of taking a break from using computers, phones, tablets, and other electronic devices.
The hours we spend hunched over these devices is causing significant harm to our health, posture, and muscles. Not surprisingly, we end up with neck pain, back pain, and other problems.
Can you not use any digital devices for an hour? For a half-day? For a whole day?
To many people this seems really difficult. What do you do instead? All the things we used to do before we had computers and TV!
Consider Starting Small
Because so many of use digital devices without even thinking about it, starting with a full-day detox is probably a big step. Instead, try a smaller step.
Consider making mealtimes a digital-free zone, with no phones allowed. Use the time to talk to each other and build relationships. If you’re alone, spend the time savoring your food and enjoying your meal. Not only will you feel better, you’ll be more satisfied!
You can also set a time of evening when you stop using digital technology. Blue light keeps us awake and makes it hard to sleep soundly anyway, so why not make a rule of no technology two hours before bedtime? You’ll sleep better and have less neck pain.
Have Fun Together Without Technology
Once upon a time, families played games together, read to each other, and had fun without technology. Take it as a challenge to make that a reality again in your own home.
If you’re alone, turn off the tech and read a real book, draw, or complete a crossword. If you have a family, get out a board game and spend a few hours playing, laughing, and enjoying each other’s company.
If the weather is nice, get outside. Play sports, go for a walk, or spend an afternoon in the park – no phones allowed.
You’ll be amazed how much less neck pain you’ll have just from spending less time hunched over a computer or phone!
Consider a Weekend – or a Week
Ready to go big? Consider taking an entire weekend as a digital detox. No phones, tablets, computers, or TVs for two whole days.
Or, you can decide to make your next family trip or vacation a digital-free zone. Don’t watch TV, post to social media, or otherwise let digital devices interfere with your experience. Instead, focus on being present at your destination, and truly enjoying the activities you have planned.
